“I am not asking for my father to be released, but I want him to receive all the treatment necessary for his illness”. This is the appeal launched by Michele Pellegrino, son of Antonio Pellegrino, 67 years old from Maddaloni, detained in the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere where he must serve another six years of the eight to which he was sentenced. Antonio Pellegrino suffers from severe left ventricular dysfunction and multi-vessel coronary disease as found in the medical report of last December 10th from the hospital of Sessa Aurunca where he was admitted. To stay alive, Pellegrino is forced to take 15 medicines a day as prescribed in the December report. According to what his son says, his father is not always given all the medicines he needs because they are not available in the penitentiary facility. “I offered to bring those medicines myself to allow my father to be treated, but I was not allowed to deliver them to him. Every day I go out to the Santa Maria prison to check on my father's condition". Antonio Pellegrino's problems began four months ago. "He was sick, but no one noticed the situation - his son said - one day he didn't show up for the meeting with us family members because he felt sick and, then, I got him to be taken to the hospital for treatment. During the journey from the prison to the hospital my father had a heart attack. His conditions were not compatible with those of the detention facility and, in fact, my father remained hospitalized for twenty days, at the end of which, he returned to prison. As can be read from the reports, my father should be constantly monitored, but, unfortunately, he is not. I appeal to everyone to ensure that my father receives the care he needs, that there is constant monitoring and, where the prison facility is unable to guarantee the necessary medicines, that we family members be allowed to bring them. We ask for nothing more, nothing less than to respect my father's rights as a human being".
