“More than 20 years after its birth, since it saw the light at the end of the distant 1999, the pedestrian area of via Scarlatti, in the Vomero district, now needs urgent and unpostponable restyling interventions – says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari -. The more than four decades since it was built are evident, also due to the lack, especially in recent times, of suitable and constant maintenance”.
“In truth, this island has very little that is “pedestrian” – continues Capodanno -. Numerous vehicles are authorized to circulate at all hours, in addition to the loading and unloading vehicles and the many cars for the disabled, who can not only circulate but also park. The paving with which some decorations were made is also affected, given that a special path for authorized vehicles has not been planned, as happens in other cities for areas designated as pedestrian islands “.
“Always due to the known deficiencies, the breakages and damages caused to the pavement, the solution was often found with the now standardised pouring of bitumen – continues Capodanno – with truly horrifying results even from an aesthetic point of view”.

“There are numerous depressions and holes, which could represent a danger for pedestrians,” Capodanno emphasizes. “In addition, the porphyry cubes have lost their seal between them, which was created a long time ago with cement mortar. Consequently, it is enough for one to fall for the neighboring ones to be taken away in an endless chain.”
“It is no better for street furniture – Capodanno points out – given that in recent years some waste bins and several benches have disappeared, never restored. On the other hand, there are many umbrellas, tables and chairs in the numerous outdoor areas and gazebos that crowd the island, without a unitary project that at least tries to harmonize them with the importance of the historic Vomero road”.
On the situation of degradation of the pedestrian area of via Scarlatti, Capodanno calls, once again, the attention of the Neapolitan municipal administration for immediate and no longer deferrable measures.
