“Our warning system was born after the allusion to Sarno in 1998 and since then we have come a long way”. This was underlined by the head of the civil protection Angelo Borrelli, visiting San Martino Valle Caudina, after the flood of 22 December last with the overflowing of a buried river that raised Piazza Municipio and inundated the entire historic centre. Borrelli recalls the flood of Sarno and Quindici which between the provinces of Salerno and Avellino caused over 150 deaths. “A lot has been done in terms of forecasting and warning – adds Borrelli, now expected on the Amalfi Coast for an inspection of the centres most affected last December – to reduce the risks for the population”.
