During an operation in Marina della Lobra, in the municipality of Massa Lubrense, within the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, the finance police of the Naples Naval Air Operations Unit seized approximately 2400 illegally caught sea urchins. The Italian Guardia di Finanza (Italian Fire Brigade) stopped the divers in action, first using a patrol boat to push them toward the reef and then with the support of other finance police officers on land. The specimens, contained in three baskets, were seized and subsequently discarded into the water because they were still alive. The catch, estimated to be worth approximately €2.500 on the black market, was presumably destined for local and Apulian restaurants. The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area represents one of the last biological repopulation areas on the Campania coast.
