As part of an investigation coordinated by the Palermo Public Prosecutor's Office, the Financial Police of Palermo and Messina have seized three Caronte & Tourist ferries (the Pace, the Caronte, and the Ulisse), along with cash, movable and immovable property, and company shares, valued at over €3,5 million. The executives of the leading company in maritime connections across the Strait of Messina are suspected of fraud for the purpose of obtaining public funds, false ideology, and fraud in public procurement. The seized vessels are currently operating on the La Maddalena/Palau, Trapani/Egadi Islands, and Palermo/Ustica routes. The list of suspects includes Sergio La Cava, 56, director and CEO of Ngi Spa (incorporated in 2017 by Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori Spa) and legal representative of Maddalena Lines Srl (a company 70% owned by Ngi Spa and owner of the “Pace”), Luigi Genchi, 55, director and CEO of Ngi Spa, Edoardo Bonanno, 48, CEO of Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori Spa, and Vincenzo Franza, 55, president of Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori Spa and former CEO of Ngi Spa. Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori Spa has been reported for administrative liability arising from the crime.
