As part of the services aimed at repressing crimes relating to road traffic, a major operation by the Police took place last night
Naples Highway Patrol, aimed at combating the resurgent phenomenon of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The “drogometro” service took place in the city of Sorrento and involved the Highway Police and medical personnel from the Health Office of the Naples Police Headquarters.
A large-scale operation that led to the control of several vehicles and their respective
drivers who have been subjected to alcohol and drug tests.
The checks by the Highway Patrol led to the issuing of 6 fines for driving under the influence of alcohol (art. 186 of the Highway Code) and one for driving under the influence of narcotic substances, specifically cocaine (art. 187 of the Highway Code), with the consequent reporting of the offender; furthermore, a driving licence was withdrawn from a newly licensed driver.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, in addition to being a violation severely punished by the Highway Code and the Penal Code, is the main cause, together with high speed, of the high number of serious road accidents, often with fatal outcomes.
The activity is one of the objectives of the Traffic Police Service, in agreement with the Ministry of Health - Department of Anti-Drug Policies, and is carried out using drug screening tests. These are saliva analyses using portable, automatic reading equipment with immediate printing of the result. The collection of saliva biological samples is carried out under the direct supervision of the health personnel of the State Police, respecting the confidentiality and personal integrity of the drivers checked.
The activity is not only aimed at ensuring the safety of road traffic, but also aimed at intensifying legality controls in particularly sensitive and community-felt matters, in relation to the delicate interests protected.
