The historic Capua Carnival reaches its 134th edition and becomes "A festa"—the theme chosen to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the current year—the favorite way to bring a smile to the faces of residents who don't want to give up tradition. This is the goal of the newly formed Capua Committee "E.20," an organization that unites all the associations, volunteers, and schools of the city bordered by the Volturno River. "The organization was created for the occasion," explains committee President Raffaele Modugno, "with the intention of involving the entire town and working together continuously and regularly over the next five years for various events and celebrations." In agreement with the Branco administration, the Municipality of Capua—with the support of Councilor for Events and Tourism Loredana Affinito, assisted by city councilor Michele Giugno, who is in charge of events consultancy—is entrusting the Carnival preparations to the E.5 Committee and has designated the former Olivarez stables as the permanent location for the Friends of the Allegorical Float Association.
The program for Campania's oldest carnival will run from February 20th to the 25th, Shrove Tuesday. The proposals are currently being prepared, but the key days for King Carnival have been determined. After Shrove Thursday, he will forgo the weekend social life, giving way to the Capua Youth Forum and evenings of music and dance. The King, played by Yuri Monaco, takes refuge in the rooms of the Royal Palace of Carditello until "U caffè della Domenica," the day he will return by carriage to Capua to greet the masked crowd and mock those who have committed misdeeds during the year from the balcony overlooking Piazza dei Giudici. "We wanted to involve the Bourbon Royal Palace of Carditello in this event," continues Dr. Modugno, "thanks to the invaluable collaboration of the president of the Royal Palace Foundation, Professor Luigi Nicolais, and engineer Roberto Formato (current director of the same Foundation). We hope for a Carnival capable of engaging and captivating the numerous artistic monuments throughout the province."
There will be no shortage of the usual allegorical floats made by papier-mâché masters, parades, itinerant shows and the so-called “cicuzze”, satirical songs that have become an integral part of the popular festival so loved by adults and children alike. The spirit of the celebrations is in the air and the preparations are anticipated and visible on the official social page of the 2020 Carnival. This is how 'A festa di ogni scherzo vale begins between art, sharing and integration.
