Naples. Gaetano Mercurio, 42, died on Easter Eve at the San Paolo Hospital in Naples, where he had been admitted since March 6. He was injured near his home on Via Terracina in Fuorigrotta. The victim, known in Camorra circles as "sfilatino," had a criminal record for extortion, and investigators believed he was close to mafia boss Vitale Troncone, who had been released from prison a few weeks earlier.

The investigations are focused on a friction that arose between the clans that control illicit trafficking in Fuorigrotta with the release of the boss Troncone. The killers had probably been warned by someone that Mercurio was leaving his house during the coronavirus restrictions. The shooter, as emerged from the vision of the cameras in the area, was a man with his face covered by a balaclava, who had fired three times at Mercurio before disappearing together with an accomplice. “Sfilatino” died the other night at the San Paolo hospital, 36 days after the ambush.
