The official website features photos of smiling elderly people among caring nurses and doctors, but the coronavirus tragedy tells a different and chilling story. At the Isabella Geriatric Center in New York, nearly one hundred elderly people have died from the infection, a number that makes the assisted living center the most serious outbreak in the state.
The complaint comes from Congressional representative Adriano Espaillat, Democrat, who spoke of “98 deaths” in a letter addressed to Governor Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Letitia James, in which he asks for an investigation to be opened not only on the New York geriatric center but on the entire system of senior centers. Of the 98 deaths, 46 are victims of the virus, while 52 are suspected of having contracted the virus. Based on these numbers, one in seven patients would have died from Covid-19. But the management would have “hidden” the statistics. In the official documents, according to the New York Post, there were only thirteen deaths from the virus. “There is a risk,” Espaillat writes, “that all transparency rules have been abandoned, leaving the relatives of the elderly without clear information.”
