The Algerian prisoner who died in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison would have turned 28 in June. The news was announced on social media by the Campania Region's Prisoners' Guarantor Samuele Ciambriello.
“Lamine H, Algerian, born in June 1992, died in the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The autopsy will establish the real causes of death. In Italy since the beginning of 2020, there have been 55 deaths in prison, while there have been 17 suicides. We talk about these people both to bring them out of anonymity, from the statistics on 'critical events', and to understand how they died. Behind every death in prison and of prison, there is a person, his family, there is a 'cross-section' of prison in Italy today”.
The prisoner was alone in his cell. The autopsy was entrusted to the Caserta hospital. There is no evidence of any symptoms of Covid-19. The prisoner was found in the Danubio ward, but came from the Nile where in recent weeks, according to reports from prisoners and their families, beatings had occurred. “Despite the various investigations relating to the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison,” wrote Pietro Ioia, Guarantor of prisoners in Naples, on social media, “today I received many reports from relatives of prisoners who gave me the news of the death of a migrant boy detained in the Danubio ward. For now, I only know his young age: 28 years old. Is it possible that in 2020 people continue to die in prison?”
