Close doors and windows: this is the order of many mayors of the Vesuvius and Nola areas following the violent explosion that occurred at Adler Plastic, the plastic components factory in Ottaviano, in the Naples area, where a violent fire broke out around 16 pm.
The Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, on the border with Ottaviano, invites you to avoid any movement in the area that is not urgent or strictly necessary; absolutely do not go near the site of the event and do not hinder rescue operations; keep children and the elderly indoors, paying particular attention to all those with respiratory diseases as well as keeping doors and windows tightly closed. Salvatore Di Sarno, mayor of Somma Vesuviana, another town bordering Ottaviano, also invited his fellow citizens, as a "precautionary measure" to keep doors and windows closed and to "avoid, except in cases of extreme necessity, moving outside, especially in the direction of Ottaviano". The same recommendation also came from the municipal administration of Marigliano. At the moment, the toll from the explosion is one dead and two injured, one of whom is in very serious condition. On site, in addition to the police, there are numerous firefighters who are securing what remains of the factory, which has partially collapsed. The flames are almost under control and the column of black, acrid smoke that, for about a couple of hours, was clearly visible even from kilometres away, has now diminished.
“Ottaviano has been hit by a terrible tragedy, which has caused one death and two injuries”. Thus, in a post on Facebook, the mayor Luca Capasso regarding the violent fire that involved the Adler Plastic. Apologizing for the delay in communications, because he was “busy on site”, the mayor asked to “close the windows as a precaution, waiting for Arpac which will carry out all the surveys very shortly”. “I repeat: this is a precaution. I will keep you updated on all developments, but now is above all the time to pray for the victim of this terrible event and for the injured”, concluded Capasso.
“Concern for the people involved” and “closeness to the families of the workers” is expressed, in a note, by Adler Plastic regarding the fire that broke out today in Ottaviano in the company’s plant. The company announces that, “once the injured have been assisted and the emergency has been managed together with the medical personnel, in collaboration with the police, everything possible will be done to verify what happened”. As soon as what happened is ascertained, the Company “will inform the press with a press release”.
“People are still dying at work. In Ottaviano, at the Adler plastic plant, a worker lost his life following an explosion and several of his colleagues were seriously injured. Only by chance was a massacre avoided”. This was declared in a joint statement by the general secretary of the CGIL of Naples, Walter Schiavella, and the general secretary of the Filctem CGIL Naples and Campania, Vincenzo De Caro. “Just yesterday in fact – Schiavella and De Caro recall – production had resumed and there were only a few workers in the factory. Let us shed full light on the causes and any responsibilities. We rally around the family of the dead worker and ask the institutions in charge to strengthen all the measures necessary to guarantee safety at work”.
