M5S: SARNO RIVER POLLUTION, URGENT REGIONAL TASK FORCE TO SAFEGUARD THE CAMPANIA ECOSYSTEM. ILLEGAL DROPPINGS DAMAGE THE ENVIRONMENT, CITIZENS' HEALTH AND THE ECONOMY
The inspection by M5S representatives: "A land on its knees for decades. It is unacceptable. Controls and severe penalties for environmental crimes. Now Campania must do its part, with an integrated wastewater cycle and the activation of Minister Costa's master plan".
It took just a few days of factories and businesses reopening for the Sarno River, whose images in the past weeks of lockdown showed us crystal-clear waters like they hadn't been for decades, to once again appear as an open-air sewer.
This morning, the parliamentarians of the 5 Star Movement Luisa Angrisani, Virginia Villani and Teresa Manzo, together with the regional councilor Michele Cammarano carried out an inspection in Sarno, near the Rio Palazzo, to verify the extent of the environmental damage.
"Within a few hours of the easing of restrictive measures with the start of Phase 2, illegal discharges and spills into the waters of the Sarno River have returned, with consequent miasmas as well as serious environmental damage, with the risk of also affecting the public health of citizens. The territory of the Agro Sarnese Nocerino has been on its knees for decades now and the continuation of this situation is no longer tolerable. Minister Sergio Costa immediately activated a Task Force of the Carabinieri of the Noe to carry out tight and targeted checks, aimed at stopping illegal discharges and illegal spills into the watercourse. But it is not enough", state the national and regional representatives of the 5 Star Movement.
"It is important not to let our guard down, especially at this time. The Campania Region must do its part and citizens must become sentinels. In recent weeks, the Ministry of the Environment has carried out sampling, and we are awaiting the results. It is necessary to implement an extraordinary strategy and careful coordination, aimed on the one hand at intensifying controls on possible dumping channels, and on the other at investing resources to implement the Master Plan drawn up by Minister Sergio Costa. We cannot tolerate that unscrupulous people continue to poison our lands and seas on a daily basis - declare the representatives of the 5 Star Movement -
We ask, once again, all the regional and municipal bodies to follow the line drawn by Minister Sergio Costa and to urgently establish a Task Force for environmental protection, which cannot ignore the construction and completion of the sewerage system. We remember that Campania pays millions of euros every year for the failure to build the sewerage system for infringement procedures initiated by the European Union. The integrated water cycle in Campania must be completely revised. Now that's enough, everyone must assume their responsibilities and start doing their part. The goal is to establish a synergic action that expands with the contribution of the M5S parliamentarians, to be submitted to Minister Costa, to support citizens in this civil battle!
