The careful investigations conducted by the personnel of the Maritime and Air Border Police of Salerno, with the constant collaboration of other officers of the foreign police forces, have allowed the dismantling of an international traffic of stolen cars destined for recycling and sale on the foreign market.
La motonave Genoa Express, è attraccata al di Salerno – proveniente dal Canada – diretta, dopo una sosta di un solo giorno, al porto di Mersin, in Turchia. La Polizia di Toronto ha segnalato il furto di due vetture di pregio:
1) a Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid, 180 horsepower, white, worth over 41.000 euros; 2) a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, black, worth over 58.000 euros. After an intense analysis, the personnel of the judicial and border police team of Salerno deduced that the cars could be hidden inside a container on board the container ship headed to the Middle East.
In fact, both the shipper from Canada and the client are Turkish nationals. In order to locate the stolen cars, the men of the judicial police team had to go to the deck of the ship and, with the help of technological equipment, carry out an accurate search among hundreds of containers. The two cars had been loaded in the port of Montreal in Canada and, after a brief stop in the port of Salerno, were destined for the Turkish port of Mersin, where they would have been lost forever.
The search was difficult and tiring because there were hundreds of containers on board the ship, some placed in a row one on top of the other, making the tracking operations extremely difficult because each one had to be carefully checked. Once the container was identified, the doors were opened and the two valuable cars appeared, placed one behind the other. Thanks to the timely intervention of the Border Police of Salerno, the two stolen cars, after the necessary surveys and checks, will be returned to their rightful owners. The investigations of the investigative team will continue in order to arrest the receiver, for which an international rogatory will be needed, which will be initiated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Salerno.
