A 39-year-old inmate took his own life last night in the Poggioreale prison in Naples: this was announced by Samuele Ciambriello, the Campania guarantor of inmates, who this morning, in the Neapolitan penitentiary institution, took part in the celebrations for the anniversary of San Basilide, patron saint of penitentiary police officers.
“During the Holy Mass – Ciambriello said – we prayed for Antonio U., a thirty-nine-year-old prisoner, who committed suicide last night in his cell, occupied with six other people, on the third floor of the Rome pavilion. Fourth suicide in Campania since the beginning of the year, twenty-three in all of Italy. Every death in prison and of prison is a failure for all of us (politics, judiciary, prison workers, civil society)”.
Ciambriello then compared the agents to the saint: "The martyr accompanied, like a soldier, the condemned to the place of torture. Even today the penitentiary police agents carry out their mission, with simplicity, dignity, humanity and spirit of service", concluded the guarantor.
