Campania “black sheep” for Mare Monstrum. 13 crimes per day for a total of 4.697 offences, 19,9% of the national total 10 violations per km of coast..Sea predators increase +35% compared to last year
Illegal concrete pouring, water pollution, poor sewage treatment and illegal fishing. The enemies of the sea and the Campania coasts always have the same names and inadequate regulations to rely on, as they say the numbers and stories of Sea Monster 2020: in Campania they are 4.697 the crimes contested in 2019, 19,9% of the national total, with a 35% increase compared to 2018. In our region the sea raiders they travel at the average of 13 crimes a day, one every two hours, as many as 10 violations per km of coastCon 4.305 people reported and arrested and 1.571 seizures. Shocking numbers in Legambiente's Mare Mostrum 2020 dossier, a snapshot of the state of the Campania sea, with our coasts hit by polluting discharges of the many places that still do not have efficient purification, dto illegal concrete that is not demolished. But also by poacherswho raid and by pleasure boaters who speed around on boats, motorboats and jet skis with no respect for the navigation code. A dossier that, through data from the police and the Port Authorities for 2019, “photographs” what the impact of illegal activities at sea and along the coasts was before the coronavirus emergency.
The national ranking for the absolute number of crimes reported sees Campania steadily at the top, leading the rankings for cement as well as for pollution and illegal navigation, giving way only in fishing, where it is second behind Sicily.
Once again, the cement aggression on the Campania coasts remains the plague that Campania and the entire country are struggling to free themselves from. Campania It also holds the national record for illegal concrete on the coasts, with 17,1% of the crimes detected in Italy. A real record of infringements is recorded 1.715 with an increase of 20% compared to last year with 1.300 people reported and arrested and 395 seizures carried out. Next to the villas, local news reports tell us of a myriad of kiosks, restaurants, parking lots, swimming pools, roads traced on the dunes and steps carved into the rock. In short, everything you need to access the shoreline effortlessly and enjoy the exclusive view of the sea. In defiance of the rules, public property and environmental protection
"This dossier - comment Francesca Ferro, director Legambiente Campania– gives us a glimpse of illegality, unfortunately, still too significant, an indication of the fact that against the “enemies of the sea” it is necessary to raise the level, not only of the repression of crimes, but also of preventive surveillance. Our beautiful and precious sea needs more care. It is a task that falls to everyone. To the citizens who must respect and defend it, to the State that must do much more. The numbers, already very heavy, that are found in these pages are only those that tell the emergence of the problem, the classic tip of the iceberg. It is clear that the women and men of the Police Force and the Port Authorities must be put in the conditions to act in a more widespread and incisive way, they must increase controls and improve the tools at their disposal to guarantee legality in such a vast territory. A territory that largely escapes social control and that necessarily needs special attention from the Institutions.”
Even with regard to infringements related to the polluted sea in particular polluting discharges and poor purification, Campania fears no rivals: I am 1937 the violations found (+ 22% compared to last year) equal to 24,8% of the national total, with 2004 people reported and arrested while there are 1084 the number of seizures. According to official Istat data, just over 44% of Italian municipalities have a purification plant that meets the standards imposed by the European Union. Even worse: in 342 municipalities, where approximately 1,4 million inhabitants live (2,4% of the population), the urban wastewater purification service is completely absent: in Campania there are 55 municipalities without purification (3,9% of the population). The Legambiente dossier It also highlights other forms of illegality that they hit the Campanian sea: on the front of the poaching, a practice very widespread and which produces harmful effects, not only on the ecosystem and biodiversity, but also on the health of consumers and the economy of the country: Campania, It is second at national level, after Sicily with and 697 infringements and 653 people reported and arrested and 91 seizures.
"For this reason, we are ready to start again with Green Schooner and Lake Schooner in an unprecedented formula for capillarity and diffusion – he concludes Francesca Ferro, Regional Director of Legambiente – In the field, in 2020, an extraordinary citizen science operation, with hundreds of volunteers directly involved in water sampling and waste census along the coasts. It is in fact up to us citizens and the institutions to take care of the aquatic ecosystem.”
La Goletta Verde will stop in Campania from 5th to 10th August and the Schooner of the Lakes will be in our region from July 27th to August 1st to return to the microplastics in inland waters, monitoring the Patria and Matese lakes. And again with the historic information and awareness campaign Recycle summer with Conai to talk about separate waste collection in the region's tourist resorts.
