Twelve dogs, kept on chains and in unsuitable makeshift shelters, were seized by the Marcianise Forestry Carabinieri in San Nicola la Strada in the province of Caserta.
The military, along with veterinarians from the local health authority (ASL), conducted an inspection of a sheep and goat farm in Pizzo Pilato, where they discovered 12 animals of various breeds: Maremma Sheepdog, Belgian Shepherd, German Shepherd, Caucasian Shepherd, and some mixed-breeds. Only nine were found to be properly microchipped. It was also discovered that all 12 dogs were restricted to minimal movement and had signs of injury on their necks due to abrasions caused by the chain.
Some of the dogs were found to have ear dermatitis caused by fly bites, and a psychotic "circle" behavior was also assessed due to the confinement. The water tanks were also found to be in critical sanitary conditions. All twelve dogs were seized and transferred to an authorized facility in Benevento, possibly for future foster care. The breeder who owned the dogs was charged with animal cruelty and keeping animals in conditions incompatible with their nature and causing severe suffering.
