"The Istat data on the demographic balance for the southern regions and, in particular, for Campania are absolutely worrying. And unfortunately for us they are anything but unexpected: the South has become a place to escape from, and not just today."

Raffaele Marrone, president of Confapi Naples, said this. "Young people are leaving the South," Marrone continued, "not only because there are no longer any development opportunities, but also because the prospects for creating value through local projects seem to have disappeared. Both local and national leaders, faced with a decline of nearly 23 citizens deciding to abandon the region in a single year, have nothing to say; and this is a worrying attitude. An inaction that almost verges on fatalism. It's even more serious when you consider that institutions have often given up on engaging with each other, each preoccupied with their own particular concerns. This is a truly unsustainable situation. It would be important for these institutions and those who govern them to rediscover the desire to collaborate and seriously begin planning a series of initiatives that, within ten years, could offer opportunities for growth: I'm thinking of tourism, the cultural industry, the advanced services sector, and the knowledge market, which, in the South, has enormous untapped potential."

"Leaving - Marrone added - whether to land in the North or abroad is irrelevant, it is now the easiest choice to make. In this way, not only are conditions of particular economic imbalance created in our country, with a rich North capable of attracting the best resources, and a South destined to survive amidst enormous difficulties and with only the level of welfare provided by the State, as long as it exists; but the foundations are also laid for a serious problem of public order. Where there is no employment and development, in fact, mafias thrive and prosper", concluded the president of Confapi Napoli.
