The “new” Coronavirus can cause headaches, with mild symptoms such as headaches but also more serious symptoms such as mood disorders; in more serious cases even stroke. The data comes from an Italian study and an English research
Il new coronavirus may cause headache (cephalea), symptoms neurological of various kinds up to very serious complications including stroke; there could also be psychiatric problems.
The list of symptoms and complications associated with Covid-19, in hospitalized patients is getting longer.
There are two studies that explain this situation, a European research with Italian scientists fromSan Paolo hospital and State of Milan , published su European Journal of Neurology; then a study carried out by various English universities, including Liverpool and published su Lancet Psychiatry.
The two studies showed a link between Covid-19 and neurological symptoms.
Neurological symptoms
The investigation was carried out involving European doctors and was carried out with online questionnaires of 17 questions.
In total, they were collected 2.300 questionnaires which reported the presence of a neurological symptom in nearly two-thirds of coronavirus patients, of whom nearly 75% passed in the emergency rooms of the Covid-19 units.
The most important part of the research according to the authors is that neurological symptoms would be quite widespread, this obviously based on the data.
The most common problems were headache (about 60% of patients), muscle pain always at the head and one temporary loss of smell in half of the people (and also of the taste in approximately 40% of cases).
There is also a 21% who would have reported important events such as ictus but remembering that the results are based on data from patients with severe Covid-19.
Has explained Albert Priori, director of the Neurological Clinic III of the San Paolo hospital “The mechanisms can be directed by the effect of the diffusion of the virus in nervous tissue, as demonstrated at the San Paolo University Campus”.
And the expert continues that there are also indirect mechanisms such as for example the important activation of the blood clotting, which can lead to stroke.
For this reason, experts conclude that it is necessary to keep the neurological manifestations even late, once the person has recovered.
The English Case Report
Instead, the research conducted by the University of Liverpool together with other research institutions is a case report.
Describes the neurological and psychiatric symptoms of 125 people with Covid-19 in the UK and describes the neurological symptoms of 77 patients who had a ictus due to the closure of a cerebral artery.
Then they studied the symptoms of 9 patients who had a stroke due to a ruptured artery and one person whose stroke was caused by inflammation of blood vessels in the brain.
Another 39 patients showed mental confusion and behavioral changes, and 7 of them had encephalitis.
The remaining 23 patients showed psychiatric problems, including psychotic symptoms, similar to those of dementia and mood disturbances.
The researchers specify, however, that it cannot be excluded that these psychological and psychiatric disorders were not present before.
undoubtedly Sharing data is essential in these researches as repeated by the authors so that we can have an increasingly earlier recognition and an even more adequate treatment with respect to the possible Covid-19 complications.
