Naples: excavation of Capodichino-Poggioreale de Magistris metro tunnel begins, our goal is to connect the airport to the city. Preliminary activities have begun for the construction of the Capodichino-Poggioreale tunnel for the extension of metro line 1, which also include the positioning, at a height of 40 meters, of a TBM – Tunnel Boring Machine “mole” that will start the construction of the tunnel.
AThe mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, and the councilor for urban policies, Carmine Piscopo, who today carried out an inspection at the Capodichino station, announced the new stage of the work. The machine, with a diameter of 7 meters, starting this month, will begin to dig the first tunnel towards Poggioreale, advancing at an average speed of 10 meters per day for a length of about 1000 meters, digging without interruption 24 hours a day. The operation of the Mole will involve the commitment of about 24 workers per shift, for 19 shifts per day, for a total, including those engaged in the yard, of 3 work units. Once the excavation of the first section is complete, the "mole" will be brought back to the beginning of the route to carry out the excavation of the second tunnel, of similar length. According to the timetable, the excavation works of the first tunnel will last about 80 months and to complete the entire work it should take just under 4 months. The works have been entrusted to the Consorzio Integra, selected by the Metropolitana di Napoli company, following a European tender procedure for a value of the works of about 18 million euros. The works for the excavation of the shaft for the construction of the Capodichino – Di Vittorio section will also begin shortly.
With the construction of these tunnels, the municipal administration emphasizes, "the percentage of works carried out by the Municipality rises to 90 percent compared to the entire metropolitan ring. This section of the work, which was originally supposed to be built by the Campania Region, will also be built by the Municipality of Naples through the Metropolitana di Napoli Spa company and will allow the closure of the metropolitan ring". "All the tunnels - continues the note - have been designed to guarantee, in the event of delays by the EAV company in the construction of the section under its jurisdiction Piscinola - Di Vittorio, the entry into operation of the Capodichino station, through a shuttle service". "With the construction of the tunnel from Capodichino to Poggioreale - state Mayor de Magistris and Councilor Piscopo - we are ever closer to the important goal of reconnecting the airport with the Naples railway station and the city center. This is a huge job for which we will work continuously to respect the established times. A thank you for this goes to the offices of the Municipality, to Metropolitana di Napoli and to those who are concretely involved in this delicate work, to expand the offer of mobility in the city territory". The president of Metropolitana di Napoli, Ennio Cascetta, highlighted that with the start of these activities "another jewel of technology will come into operation that makes Naples an international point of reference in technological innovation in our sector. An important signal also for the restart of the construction sites which, to protect the safety of workers and citizens, are starting to operate again at full capacity to realize the great project of the Naples subway that up to now has connected and redeveloped important parts of the city".
