San Domenico_Arts Square. Let's support culture, let's reopen spaces. Convent of San Domenico Maggiore – vico San Domenico 18 by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples July – August – September 2020
The location is the Convent of San Domenico Maggiore, with its courtyard, its cloister, its monumental staircase, the library and the Chapter Hall, the large and small refectory: a place that exudes history and beauty returned to the Municipality of Naples, managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism after a long restoration in 2012, transformed into a small 'culture factory'. Large exhibitions, small exhibitions, concerts, performances, events, readings have been taking place every day for years now: a happy oasis in the heart of the old town of Naples in vico san Domenico 18, a few steps from the most famous square known for the church, the obelisk, the Palazzo Marigliano that overlooks it and the nightlife.
And from here, after the terrible lockdown of the past few months, it was decided to start again, reviving this place and the activities that can find renewed hospitality and new ways of expression in it. San Domenico_Piazza d'arti is the project that this summer will bring the Convent to the center of the city's daily cultural life with morning, afternoon and evening activities: the theatrical rehearsals entrusted with a participated expression of interest to the live entertainment sector to respond to the great crisis caused by the COVID-19 emergency; the book presentations, now necessarily outdoors, organized at sunset in the suggestive cloister; 'Ripartenza in Comune', a series of meetings with the cultural and tourism professional categories to rethink and organize together a path to resuming activities, starting from the analysis of the critical issues of the present; the musical aperitifs in the early evening; music, theater and dance in the large courtyard selected through a public tender procedure that expires on July 6; finally the exhibitions.
The difficulties that arose due to the pandemic did not stop us. The need to welcome and build alternative cultural programs that respond to the needs of our reference sectors was our driving force. This reopening is our concrete contribution to the restart.
Added to this is the healthy desire for sociality, in compliance with anti-covid measures, the need to start again and to do so with the contents that only the culture and beauty of a magical place like the Convent of San Domenico Maggiore can give us. With the activities of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples we have never really stopped, experimenting on social media in March and April with the #NONFERMIAMOLACULTURA program and the Maggio dei Monumenti online, but we are excited now to find ourselves, even if limited, physically in places of culture to nourish ourselves with culture and beauty - declares the Councilor for Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples Eleonora de Majo.
