Santa Maria Capua Vetere. There is a riot again in the Sammaritano prison, the prison police union raises the alarm: "The open detention regime is a failure". The protest that broke out yesterday evening is still ongoing.
S: Tension is once again being recorded at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, where since yesterday evening, the institute's high-security women's ward has been protesting against the suspension of video calls by the Department of Penitentiary Administration. The protest is still ongoing and to make the already difficult situation worse, approximately 150 high-security inmates from the Tamigi ward have been added who refuse to return from walks. The news was reported by the deputy general secretary of Sinappe, Luigi Vargas: "Unfortunately, despite the change in Command and the transfer of some troublemaking inmates, the situation is increasingly difficult. A serious change of direction is needed. It is now clear that these riots are instrumental and probably have a direction aimed at obtaining further benefits or reductions in sentences. We must acknowledge that the open prison regime has proven to be a failure. Crime is conquering more and more territory even in prisons and this is also demonstrated by the frequent discovery of telephones, drugs and tools suitable for offending. The Penitentiary Police does what it can, relying now only on the spirit of sacrifice and sense of abnegation, but this is not enough. Minister Bonafede must take note of this failed management and the Government has the duty to intervene decisively, also through the instrument of 41 bis for the time necessary to restore the conditions of safety inside the prisons, also to protect public order and all citizens. We need men, means and resources. We can no longer tolerate further immobility.”
