The environmental association: “Protect biodiversity, coastal seascapes and enhance the economy, to put a stop to the loss of biodiversity, also caused by the climate crisis”
Over fifty boats of the members of the Naval League of Pozzuoli and Naples cLegambiente volunteers on board they gathered off the Trentaremi Bay of the Gaiola Marine Protected Area where they unrolled two banners with the words “Vir o mar quant'è bell”.
On the occasion of the stage of Legambiente Green Schooner in Campania, was held this morning off the coast of the Baia dei Trentaremi in Naples, the flash sea mob of Legambiente Campania, in collaboration with the Naval League and the Gaiola Marine Protected Area and with the support of the Coast Guard, to ask the institutions to support and enhance the Marine Protected Areas starting from the Neapolitan one of Gaiola, a model of virtuous management of the territory and of the sea resource and ask to establish new MPAs (Marine protected areas) in Campania starting from the one in Capri, already financed but not yet established.
The 34th edition of Goletta Verde sees as main partners CONOU, National Consortium for the Management, Collection and Treatment of Used Mineral Oils, and Novamont, a leading international company in the bioplastics and biochemicals sector. Supporting partner is instead Recreate, National Consortium for the recycling and recovery of steel packaging. The 2020 campaign is also carried out with the contribution of Fastweb. Media partner is the New Ecology.
The establishment of new Marine Protected Areas means creating prosperity for today's citizens and for generations to come, helping to find the solution to combine environmental and economic well-being, leading to a fish repopulation and therefore to an increase in fishing in the medium/long term and to an increase in tourist attractiveness. Marine Protected Areas are effective tools to protect biodiversity and coastal marine landscapes, necessary to make a real leap in quality in the defense and careful management of sea resources and in the enhancement and protection of sea professions, starting with the protection of small-scale coastal fishing and underwater activities and sustainable recreational boating.
Legambiente agrees with the European Commission which, in the European Strategy for Biodiversity presented on 20 May, proposes to increase the protected territory in Europe and globally by up to 30%, by establishing new parks and other marine protected areas which in our country, in particular, must increase their size and improve the quality of their management.
“It is necessary to establish parks and marine areas while waiting to complete the process – declares Mariateresa Imparato, president of Legambiente Campania – and for Campania this objective translates into the establishment of the Marine Protected Area of the Island of Capri (the preliminary studies have already been funded) and of the Sorrento Peninsula National Park and the Amalfi Coast, which includes the current Lattari Mountains Regional Park, the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and the areas of the Natura 2000 network that substantially almost always concern the same municipalities that participate in three different levels of governance (regional park, AMP, and Natura 2000 sites). This would also provide the opportunity for a unitary management for the UNESCO site of the Amalfi Coast. It is also necessary to establish the Torre la Punta Marine Protected Area in Campania that concerns the coast of the Municipality of Pollica, between the villages of Acciaroli and Pioppi and includes a body of water of over 1 million square meters rich in biodiversity and archaeological finds from the Greco-Roman era”.
There are several requests put forward by Legambiente such as the increase of protected areas and integral protection zones, bringing 30% of land and marine areas under protection and 10% of areas under absolute protection. The growth of protected marine area in our country, through the establishment of new marine areas or coastal parks, it is an effective strategy to protect biodiversity, coastal seascapes and enhance the economy, putting a stop to the loss of biodiversity, also caused by the climate crisis.
“I am happy that the Park celebrated its eighteenth birthday today in good company – says Maurizio Simeone, director of the Amp Parco sommerso di Gaiola -. We cannot but share the appeal launched by the Legambiente Goletta Verde Campaign for the protection of our sea and a more conscious and sustainable use of its resources. The Marine Protected Area Parco Sommerso di Gaiola, as is known, has had to travel a particularly steep road in recent years to save a small portion of the city sea from the decade-long degradation in which it had been in order to protect and enhance the immense naturalistic and archaeological heritage that it preserves. We have therefore welcomed with open arms the initiative of Legambiente which has chosen the Gaiola Park as a virtuous example of recovery and sustainable management, probably if it is possible to do it in the heart of a city of over a million inhabitants it can be done anywhere ... you just have to want it”.
“The Naval League of Pozzuoli and the Naval League of Naples – the two presidents of the Naval League jointly declare – are always at the forefront engaged in the defense and protection of environmental resources and the sea. The aim of our actions is to spread the culture based on love, respect and protection of the precious asset that is the “mare nostrum”. Our commitment is constantly aimed at encouraging correct behavior at sea, the protection of marine protected areas and their expansion necessary to safeguard marine biodiversity, and the fight against any form of activity that leads to environmental damage. The Lega Navale of Pozzuoli and the Lega Navale of Naples will always be at Legambiente's side in all actions aimed at safeguarding marine resources and environmental resources. We hope that this initiative is only the beginning of a long and intense collaboration.”
