Penniless truck drivers from Caserta killed a tire dealer in Ravenna: the State will compensate the victim's family.
The Civil Court of Rome has ordered the Presidency of the Council of Ministers to pay 50 euros in compensation to Katia Di Benedetto, at the time the live-in girlfriend of 35-year-old tire dealer Andrea Tartari from Bologna, who was killed with six stab wounds during a trivial street fight on July 20, 2008 in Porto Corsini, on the Ravenna coast. The woman, according to what was reported by Resto del Carlino, in 2015, through the Bologna lawyer Antonio Gambetti, had sued the State on the basis of a 2004 EU directive, not implemented in time, which requires member states to organize an adequate fund for victims of violent crimes in the event that those responsible are unable to pay.
As in this case, in fact, where the two perpetrators of the crime - two truck driver brothers, Salvatore and Giovanni Vertone, aged 44 and 41, originally from Mondragone, stopped by the carabinieri near the Carinola prison after a daring escape and definitively sentenced to 30 and 21 years 8 months of imprisonment in addition to full compensation for damages - never even paid the provisional amount. The attempt to join the enforcement proceedings on the home of the two, located right in front of the crime scene, had failed due to insufficient capacity: once in prison, the two had stopped paying the mortgage.
Tartari had been killed in front of his girlfriend, with whom he had been living for about ten years in Marzabotto, dying in her arms. Circumstances that, as the Court of Rome underlined, had psychological repercussions on the woman who had also been injured due to a tug given to her by one of the two brothers to prevent her from helping her partner.
