Thanks to a pharmacist's complaint, the Salerno prosecutor's office and the Anti-Mafia Directorate have brought to light a business managed by a criminal holding company that has purchased at least ten pharmacies
The Salerno prosecutor's office and the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate have uncovered, thanks to the complaint of a victim, a pharmacist, a business managed by professionals (an accountant, several lawyers, financial brokers, and entrepreneurs under investigation at large) with a criminal holding company that purchased at least a dozen pharmacies in the city and province. This was reported in the newspaper Il Mattino, which reports some details of the ongoing investigations: one for usury and extortion, the other for investments of illicit proceeds.
The modus operandi of the criminal holding: reported by a pharmacist
According to the investigations reported by the newspaper, the victim was always contacted in social contexts in which the accountant (under investigation) created informal and professional contact to study the context and financial situation of the targeted activity in order to propose solutions. It began with the relationship with the banks which, "with the complicity of a compliant Calabrian lawyer, ended up deteriorating so much as to make it necessary to resort to the Luxembourg financial company and start a series of financial procedures with interests requested of even over 70%". A pharmacist reported what was happening, allowing the perpetrators to be framed through telephone and environmental interceptions and thus saving his business. The lines, according to the reconstruction, were held by the accountant who "would have organized a «system» to «revive» the pharmacies after the two liquidity crises due to the missed payments of the Local Health Authorities" by entering into all their activities first with financing, "with usurious interest, through a Luxembourg company, then with the imposition of supplies from «its» own drug distribution company willing to grant credit even in the presence of previous unpaid debts and collecting interest on the credits, sometimes even issuing invoices for deliveries never made". Finally, "when the business was collapsing, an entrepreneur intervened who bought the pharmacies at a low price and also the bank debts. Debts that were then not paid, forcing the credit institutions to recover the money from the same sellers who, in turn, were forced to pay with the «miserable» proceeds from the sale of their own activities, debts they thought they had freed themselves of".
Open investigations: usury, extortion, illicit investments
There are two open investigations. The one “for usury and extortion would see two people under investigation, one of whom is the accountant”; the other “sees the entrepreneur who purchased the pharmacies and other professionals under investigation for reinvestment of illicit proceeds. Five companies have been identified, all connected to each other and all attributable to the accountant, who according to the investigators would have had a decisive role in the acquisition of the pharmacies. Four are of a financial nature: a holding company, a credit securitization company, a consultancy company and a services company. The fifth, however, is a pharmaceutical wholesaler. The liquidity provider for all operations, however, is a sixth company (on which investigations are still ongoing) with headquarters in Luxembourg and in which the accountant from Salerno – according to the investigators, enjoys great trust”.
