Coronavirus in Naples, the director of 118: "Difficulties in hospitalization places, they must increase. Infections are rising, the network is holding up now but with some difficulty".
“Naples and all of Campania are certainly having some difficulty with Covid hospitalization places. New places will be needed between now and a month, as Governor De Luca also explained”. This was stated by the director of 118 of the ASL Napoli 1 and the regional center Giuseppe Galano, taking stock of the available beds in hospitalization and sub-intensive care, given that for now there are intensive care units available. “We are also approaching the seasonal flu period – explains Galano – which increases hospitalizations by about 10% every year, which is why the vaccination campaign will be important. In two weeks or so the flu will arrive, bringing further needs and requests for intervention and more available places will be needed. At this moment at a regional level we are able to deal with the situation but in the future these availability needs to increase”.

At the moment, as the number of infected people increases, the possibility also increases "that there are people who need to be hospitalized for low and medium intensity care, because fortunately these are our needs now", explains Galano. The difficulties in finding covid hospital beds also translate into longer times for hospitalization: "I remember that at this moment there are - explains Galano - seven 118 operations centers with territorial jurisdiction, Naples Center, Naples 2 for the Phlegraean area and Naples 3 for the Sorrento area, then Caserta, Salerno, Avellino and Benevento. Each center refers to the hospital facilities in its own territory but when it finds itself in difficulty it refers to the center, Naples 1 and we do a reconnaissance at a regional level. I repeat, now the system is holding up with a bit of difficulty but we need to expand availability".
A filter to best interpret the patient's conditions and understand where to take him is that of the general practitioners: "it is a fundamental territorial filter - explains Galano - that works but could work better, even if sometimes it is not the fault of territorial medicine because it is often much quicker for the citizen to call 118 directly, a bit like what happened before when people went directly to the hospital emergency room without consulting their doctor first".
