An inmate under guard at the San Leonardo hospital in Salerno attacked three prison officers by kicking, punching, spitting and throwing the tray from which the meal is served.
The inspector and the two assistant chiefs of the Penitentiary Police who intervened were judged curable in 7, 5 and 3 days respectively. This was announced by the penitentiary police union Osapp. For the regional secretary of Osapp Campania Vincenzo Palmieri it is "a very serious fact since it is an external critical event in public places. Therefore, the applause and praise go to the personnel who intervened and were attacked who were able to manage the serious episode in the best possible way, given the context. In this regard, we hope for political actions aimed at improving the working conditions of the Penitentiary Police personnel employed in external services". For the regional vice-secretary of Osapp Campania Luigi Castaldo "assaults are the order of the day and the common denominator is violence that unfortunately is not countered with severe deterrent rules. Attacking a member of the police force, such as today's penitentiary police officers, should be judged a very serious act with appropriate penalties. Furthermore, law enforcement agencies should be provided with more equipment and suitable means to counter these dangerous events."
