Senators Francesco Castiello, Felicia Gaudiano and Regional Councillor Michele Cammarano: “An important result, the fruit of years of struggles and mobilisations by the M5S”
“The battle is not over and will continue until the Frecciarossa and Italo also stop at Battipaglia station: a result that should be achieved soon – Michele Cammarano enthusiastically emphasizes – These connections will further reduce travel times to reach Rome, as they will not pass through Naples Central, but only through Naples Afragola. A necessity, that of promoting the mobility of goods and citizens, submitted by the M5S representatives of the Government already to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, during his official visit last November to Vallo della Lucania for the “Manifesto del Mezzogiorno – 10 proposals for the development of internal areas to combat depopulation” in the presence of 100 mayors of Cilento and Vallo Di Diano. “To encourage the passenger service of the Freccia Rossa and Italo trains in Battipaglia, making it the reference high-speed hub for the Piana del Sele, Vallo di Diano, Cilento and Basilicata, we also managed to obtain the reduced toll for this type of train, the approval of the PROMO tariff, i.e. the reduced toll for AV trains that extend the service south of Salerno – explains Senator Francesco Castiello – This means that the Frecciarossa and Italo train stops in Battipaglia will be exempt from the payment of expensive tolls, otherwise due to Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, thus incentivizing Trenitalia and Italo SpA to perform the stops themselves. I trust that this experience can be replicated in other territories. In the country system, railway connections play a key role, as they connect the territories and have a propulsive effect on local economies. Studies show that in the 10 years of the high-speed train, the cities that have been able to benefit from this service have achieved a GDP growth of between 8 and 10%, with the consequent increases in employment. Those without the AV service have stopped between 0,4 and 3%”.
On the need to radically reorganise the local public transport network, essential for decongesting densely urbanized areas and creating more efficient connections to and from internal areas, intervenes Senator Felicia Gaudiano: “We must put a stop to and stem the intellectual and productive emigration from Campania and the South. We need broad-based planning, a new development strategy, which also includes the strengthening of integrated rail mobility, to promote connections and reduce physical distances, encouraging the tourist vocation of our wonderful land. Visiting Cilento will be easier for all tourists who want to know the historical, cultural, food and wine and landscape beauties that our Campania offers”.
