Pancreas, a biodegradable prosthesis implanted for the first time in Campania. Giuseppe Longo: «An excellent intervention and a tangible sign of top-quality assistance that has never stopped».
Operated at 77 years old with the grafting of a biodegradable prosthesis, so as not to have to proceed with a second access for the removal of the prosthesis (removal surgery that could have exposed the patient to a greater risk). It happened for the first time in Campania at the Cardarelli in Naples, where the team led by Dr. Giovanni Lombardi, director of the Complex Operating Unit of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy, intervened on a patient sent from Santa Maria delle Grazie in Pozzuoli. The intervention once again underlined the centrality of the Antonio Cardarelli Hospital of Naples in the regional healthcare landscape and highlighted the great ability of the regional hospital companies to work as a team for the good of the patients.
Under the guidance of the primary Giovanni Lombardi, the team composed of the second operator Francis Paul Zito, by the anesthesiologist Nicholas Lisco of the UTIF directed by Dr. Cyrus Esposito and from the CPSI Silvia Noviello e Thomas Cozzolino has completed this complex endoscopic intervention. A very delicate procedure precisely because it is aimed at identifying and eliminating the stone from a sensitive organ such as the pancreas. «The intervention – explains Lombardi – does not produce any scars, in fact it is entered through the mouth and reaches the duodenum. At that point the endoscope is guided into the papilla that secretes both the bile that comes from the liver and gallbladder, and the pancreatic juice». A procedure that is anything but simple with which the Cardarelli team identified the stone, once the pancreatic duct (second duodenum) was explored, and eliminated it. «We then inserted the biodegradable prosthesis to protect the patient from the possibility of pancreatitis», continues Lombardi. The choice to intervene with the biodegradable prosthesis avoided the patient having to be transferred again to the Cardarelli for the second intervention, (saving her an unnecessary risk) and generating savings for the coffers of the public health system.
"I spoke to Dr. Raffaele Ranucci, Chief of the UOC of Medicine at Santa Maria delle Grazie - says Lombardi - and he confirmed that the patient is in excellent conditions, without any increase in pancreatic enzymes. I also want to thank my colleague for having identified Cardarelli as a center of excellence and for having made this collaboration possible in the interest of the patient".
The strategic management of the company highlights the ability to work as a team, but also the extraordinary professionalism of all the Cardarelli staff. «Responding to the health needs of patients with absolutely innovative interventions for the regional panorama – the general manager underlines Joseph Longo and the health director Joseph Russo – is a characteristic of a reality that can boast the best professionals at a national level. Cardarelli, which certainly has a strong vocation for the emergency part, once again proves itself to be a reference hub for very complex procedures. And this is even more important if it happens in the midst of a pandemic, because it is the tangible sign of a very high quality assistance that despite everything has not only never stopped, but has even achieved results never achieved before».
PPrecisely to guarantee maximum patient safety and the integrity of the departments, a stringent anti-Covid protocol continues to be used for each patient. A necessary precaution to ensure that the Cardarelli in Naples continues to always be a safe hospital.
