“In Pompeii, a municipality belonging to the Metropolitan City of Naples, subjected to an infringement procedure for air quality, the municipal administration will have to design a plan for planting new trees and will have to do so according to very specific criteria present in the ministerial decree for urban reforestation. It will be possible to plant trees, improve the city's green infrastructure to promote the health and well-being of citizens”, said Senator Virginia La Mura the day after the approval of the implementing decree that allocates 30 million euros to finance urban reforestation.
“Trees – continues La Mura – are a primary asset for the liveability of cities and environmental protection: they produce oxygen, improve air quality, combat global warming, improve social relationships and mood. In Pompeii there is no proper management of greenery, trees are cut down or pruned out of season, and I am not aware of a census or even a greenery plan. Already in the 2014 municipal electoral program we predicted that by 2020 we would have increased the trees in Pompeii. We saw far, I made a promise to myself even before I made a promise to the citizens. Today with the implementing decree for urban reforestation the Municipality will obtain funding respecting the parameters of planting, care, protection and maintenance of green areas for at least 7 years. The paradigm that sees concrete as the only useful service to the population must change, when it is exactly the opposite!”, concludes the Pompeian senator.
