More than half of the world's population regularly uses social networks. In our country there are 35 million active users on social media, and in the long months of lockdown for the Covid-19 emergency there has been an increase in the use of this type of tool.

However, a worrying fact emerges: it seems that the main users of social media are young people and very young people, very often without the parental supervision .

What are the most used social media in 2020?

Data in hand, the most used social networks in Italy in 2020 are:

  1. Facebook, with as many as 29 million users;
  2. Instagram, with 20 million users;
  3. LinkedIn, with 14 million users;
  4. Pinterest, with 12 million users;
  5. TikTok, a new entry with already over 6 million subscribers;
  6. Twitter, with 3,7 million users;
  7. Snapchat, with over 3 million users.

As mentioned, a large portion of the social network user base in Italy is made up of young and very young digital natives, sometimes even under 10.

While Facebook and almost all other social media theoretically impose Minimum age thresholds to access the service, in fact, no check is performed to evaluate the truthfulness of the information entered to open a profile and no sanctions are foreseen to punish any violations. In other words, at the moment there are no tools capable of preventing a user from creating a profile with data that does not correspond to the truth.

This has led to the proliferation of fake social media profiles and their misuse by minors. Simply entering a different date of birth is enough to gain access to most social networks. You can also search for information on how to spy on a cell phone.

Furthermore, a phenomenon that seems to be common among very young people is the tendency to indiscriminately add anyone to their circle, regardless of the risks they expose themselves to by doing so.

Others provide the possibility of creating a sort of link between the parents' and children's accounts.

However, while we wait for more effective methods to be implemented to ensure compliance with Italian and European laws that set the age limit for the use of social media at 14 years, parents have no choice but to carry out more careful controls on children's online activity to protect them from the dangers of the web.

Help in this sense comes from some applications, such as mSpy, that allow you to gain remote access to your child's cell phone e:

  • monitor social media activities;
  • access conversations on instant messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, Kik, Telegram, WeChat, etc.;
  • read the contents of emails and SMS;
  • monitor both incoming and outgoing calls;
  • detect location and track movements;
  • view shared, received and downloaded images and videos;
  • access the address book;
  • view your web browsing history.

Some apps also allow you to block unwanted sites for children and monitor the time minors spend online.
