One of the 17 Penitentiary Police officers who tested positive for Covid in the Carinola prison has died.
The outbreak at the Caserta facility had erupted in recent days, and today it claimed its first victim: 52-year-old Antonio Maiello, who died in the hospital after three days in intensive care. Maiello, married with children, lived in Cellole. The USPP (Italian Penitentiary Police Union) has responded to the matter, with a statement from Giuseppe Moretti (national president) and Ciro Auricchio (Campania regional secretary), who express "our sympathies to the family of our poor colleague and our deepest condolences."
"This is not the first time," they continue, "that a colleague has left us due to contracting Covid-19. We understand that other colleagues working at Carinola prison have been hospitalized for the same reason. We are therefore calling for an acceleration of the vaccination plan, which, in Phase 3, also includes vaccination for Penitentiary Police. Following the assurances received by the National Secretariat in Rome from the Special Commissioner for the Emergency, Domenico Arcuri, regarding the priority of vaccination for prison staff, we ask that you urge the Regions, and in particular the Campania Region, to urgently begin administering the vaccines first and foremost to Penitentiary Police staff, who are on duty 24/XNUMX in penitentiary facilities, in order to avert the dramatic risk of further deaths."
