Drugs, mafia infiltration, robberies, and thefts: the Italian State Police are launching a crackdown on crime. In Salerno, 45 people have been charged with drug trafficking.
In six operations in Salerno, Rome, Milan, Reggio Emilia, Catania, and Lecco, 750 officers are arresting 160 people. The police announced this in a statement. "The complex investigations, coordinated by the Central Operations Service of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate, have led to the severe targeting of several criminal organizations," the statement reads.
In Salerno in particular, the Flying Squad, delegated by the Salerno District Attorney's Office, is conducting a large-scale operation targeting a criminal organization dedicated to the illicit trafficking of narcotics. The organization is rooted throughout the Salerno area and its province, with ramifications in the Naples hinterland. The officers are executing a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Salerno against 45 suspects charged, to varying degrees, with conspiracy to traffic narcotics. The organization's drug dealing activity continued during the lockdown and the containment measures adopted to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-XNUMX. This activity contributed to fueling the criminal environment during the period of restricted mobility and the associated reduction in the commission of other types of crime.
Across Italy, 160 arrests have been made, including "eighty arrests in Rome, Salerno, and Milan against members of various criminal organizations operating in those areas, engaged in the mass distribution of significant quantities of narcotics," according to the release. "At the same time, in Reggio Emilia and Catania, 70 precautionary measures have been taken against those responsible for property crimes, thefts, and robberies." "Finally, in Lecco, a mafia organization composed of members of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta operating in Lombardy has been dismantled; 10 arrests are underway for mafia-related criminal association." "All investigative units of the State Police—the Flying Squads, Crime Prevention Units, and the Central Operations Service, in collaboration with the Judicial Authority—are constantly engaged in monitoring criminal activity in order to identify and neutralize it," said Prefect Francesco Messina, Central Director of the State Police's Anti-Crime Unit.
