Francesco Greco, Attorney of Naples North retires after 44 years of service
Francesco Greco, head of the Public Prosecutor's Office of North Naples, will retire tomorrow after a 44-year career, with no regrets but with one regret: not having been able to give the investigating office based in Aversa, opened just seven and a half years ago but already become the fifth office in Italy in terms of workload, a stable organizational structure, with resource shortages that have become almost structural.
A few numbers are enough to understand "the irrational inadequacy of the organizational structure of the Prosecutor's Office of Naples North - says Greco - which clashes with that of other smaller and less overworked judicial offices". Obviously the lack of resources also affects the court, where until recently there was no videoconferencing, or the courtrooms were small and crowded, despite the very high number of proceedings. And yes, because Naples North includes 38 municipalities in the Caserta and Naples areas, few in number, but those with the highest population and criminal density, all part of the Land of Fires, the territory where there are more landfills and widespread illegality, and where the Camorra has dominated unchallenged for years, from Giugliano in Campania to Caivano, from Casal di Principe to Villa Literno.
“A border territory” Greco defines it, which shows how there is “still little attention for the suburbs”. “We hope that Minister Cartabia realizes the situation and responds to our repeated requests, and perhaps decides to come in person to Aversa, given that the other Keepers of the Seals, although invited, have never come”.
Each prosecutor in North Naples has an average of a thousand files to work on, yet the rate of completion of proceedings is among the highest in Italy; and this despite the fact that the average age of the Prosecutor's Office is low, 40-42 years, and that new prosecutors periodically arrive. "This is something that makes me proud," underlines Greco, who then recalls how the Office, despite the difficulties, has been able to define "all the murders that have occurred since September 2013", the date on which the Prosecutor's Office and the Court began to function. The high magistrate, among the events that have affected him, recalls the murder of little Fortuna Loffredo at the Parco Verde in Caivano, where "we carried out very detailed investigations that allowed us to discover the degradation that was in that complex, and that is still there. Obviously, the other institutions should have done more too."
