Naples: Appeal for the Enrico Caruso Museum. Today, 148th Anniversary of His Birth
[Press release]
Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, on the occasion of the 148th anniversary of the birth of Enrico Caruso, which falls today, February 25, relaunches, with a group dedicated to the story on the social network Facebook on the page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/caruso.enrico/ , the appeal for a museum dedicated to him to be opened as soon as possible in Naples, the city where he was born on 25 February 1873, and where he died on 2 August 1921, this year also being the centenary of his death, a project which, after being proposed at the end of the 90s, now seems to have fallen into complete oblivion.
In the group's presentation, Capodanno underlines the importance of finally creating a museum in the city where all his memorabilia can be collected.
“At present – Capodanno recalls – there are already two museums dedicated to the great tenor, one in the villa Bellosguardo in Lastra a Signa, in the province of Florence, and another in Brooklyn, but, unfortunately, none in Naples.”
"It may be a coincidence," Capodanno points out. "The fact remains that the great Neapolitan tenor is buried in Naples, in a private chapel in the cemetery of Santa Maria del Pianto in via Nuova del Campo, a few meters from the chapel where another great artist rests, the unforgettable Antonio De Curtis, aka Totò, who, 123 years after his birth, an anniversary that fell on February 15, is also awaiting the opening of a museum dedicated to him in Naples."
Capodanno hopes that the initiative to open a museum dedicated to Enrico Caruso in the capital of Naples, also following the numerous consents expressed by the many admirers of the lyric tenor, will serve to stir the waters and that, through the intervention of both the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities as well as the Campania Region and the Municipality of Naples, it will be possible to quickly offer proper recognition to a great artist, the pride of Neapolitan music and culture, known throughout the world, finally establishing a museum dedicated to him, which could find a suitable location, once it is acquired by the public heritage, in the house where he was born at number 7 of the current Via Santi Giovanni e Paolo, at the time called Via San Giovanniello.
