In prison at 83 years old, taken ill last Saturday and returned behind bars after a night under observation in hospital, he is in "precarious health conditions".
Samuele Ciambriello, guarantor of prisoners in Campania, has announced that he is following the health case of Giovanni Marandino, an 83-year-old who has already been definitively sentenced for mafia-style criminal association, having been recognized as an affiliate of Raffaele Cutolo's Nuova Camorra Organizzata.
Marandino was arrested on February 3 for usury and illegal exercise of financial activity in execution of an order of the investigating judge of Salerno, as part of an investigation by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office from which it emerged that, despite being subject to the obligation to reside in the municipality of Capaccio Paestum (Salerno), Marandino managed the usurious loan business from his home, defined as "a real financing logistics center".
Marandino, held in the Poggioreale prison in Naples, was taken ill last Saturday and was taken to the Vecchio Pellegrini hospital, where he remained under observation all night, and returned to prison on Sunday.
"I am in daily contact with the Health Directorate of the Poggioreale prison - explains Ciambriello - who updates me on the health treatments in progress. I believe that the right to health and life must enjoy adequate protection also with respect to the needs of justice and investigation by the judicial authority. While respecting the precautionary system in the case of serious crimes, I believe that this must be implemented through the gradation of the measure with the application of a more adequate restriction when the person involved is in precarious psycho-physical conditions, as in the case of Mr. Marandino".
