“Attributing the death of the Bellona patient to the 118 doctors is wrong, as well as unfair.”
This was stated by the national president of Saues, an autonomous union for health emergency urgency, Paolo Ficco, in relation to the interventions carried out by 118 on 19 February at the home of patient Michele Messuri of Bellona who died at home after, according to his family, 118 had denied hospital admission. A complaint was filed with the Carabinieri on the incident and an investigation was opened by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Ficco "while understanding the pain of the patient's family to whom we renew our condolences" specifies that a refusal to hospitalization was expressed.

“Knowing the professionalism of the doctors of the 118 Service of CASERTA, their commitment in carrying out their activity by responding to all the health requests that come from the territory, even those that often go beyond their duties, we believe that they do not deserve to be accused of negligence, or laziness”. “These doctors – the president of Saues is keen to point out – continue to work by extending their shift beyond 12 hours, until 18 and even 24 hours, for failure to dismount, continue to work shifts under overtime without enjoying weekly rest and holidays, continue to work the shift without ever resting”.
“These men and women – concludes Ficco – therefore deserve gratitude and recognition for the extraordinary contribution they provide daily to the entire healthcare system, for the dedication they reserve for each individual citizen, especially in this phase of the serious Covid-19 pandemic”.
