Twitter wants to monetize, thinks about paid content. Works on Super Follows, subscription for posts from special accounts
Twitter is working on a subscription service where users would pay for special content posted by high-profile accounts. The platform announced the potential new 'Super Follows' service during its annual investor meeting, where it said it is aiming for 315 million users by 2023.
Twitter currently makes money through ads and promoted posts, but Super Follows could add more revenue along the lines of YouTube. “Exploring audience funding opportunities will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audiences,” a Twitter spokesperson said.
According to the specialized site The Verge, Twitter showed investors an example of a $4,99 per month subscription that the user would pay to receive content from special accounts.
The launch of this subscription content feature – no timeframe has been disclosed, however – would be the second major change to the platform since the first tweet was launched 15 years ago, on March 21, 2006 (the platform then opened to the public on July 15 of the same year).
The first major change was the extension of the characters, from the famous 140 of the beginning to 280 characters in 2017. “We are rethinking our service, the behaviors and characteristics that our product encourages or discourages when people participate in the conversation on Twitter,” the spokesperson added. In the meeting with investors, the company also said that it is working on another feature that gives the ability to create and join groups based on specific interests.
