They sold fake insurance policies and will have to answer for criminal conspiracy aimed at fraud
DThe 4 people who were the subject of a custody order signed by the investigating judge of Naples and executed by the judicial police team of the Marche Highway Patrol will have to answer for criminal association aimed at fraud.
The investigation, coordinated by the Naples prosecutor's office and lasting over a year, has uncovered a gang that sold insurance policies through websites throughout Italy: another 250 people are currently under investigation. The first defrauded driver was identified in Senigallia (Ancona): the investigation began here and, due to territorial jurisdiction, the Ancona prosecutor's office then transferred it to colleagues in Naples. So far, 1.095 people have filed a complaint after discovering that their car was uninsured. From what has been learned, the scam has allowed the gang to pocket around 3 million euros, at a rate of almost 100 thousand euros per month.
The scammers had set up a web page, similar to those of major insurance companies or real brokers, through which it was possible to obtain a quote by entering a series of data, including the telephone number of the interested party, who was contacted and offered an attractive rate.
Once the agreed sum was received, the alleged broker sent, via WhatsApp and email, the image of the contract and the address of a fake website, created specifically, on which to check the insurance coverage, which was never activated. In some cases, the defrauded users became aware of the scam only after having had road accidents, when the police verified the existence of the insurance.
From what has been learned, the gang was identified through the use of 350 debit cards registered to 249 people. The precautionary measures involved three women and a man, all from Naples, who were stopped in the provinces of Chieti and Naples: the man and one of the two women ended up in prison and the other two women under house arrest. The investigation is still open.
