The central group of criminals who managed an international traffic of drugs intended for particular treatments such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy was in Sant'Antimo.
They discovered it Nas Carabinieri of Latina who this morning executed 18 precautionary measures, 5 in prison, 5 under house arrest and 8 with the obligation to report to the judicial police as part of the investigation "Traveling Drug". They are all accused of criminal association aimed at international drug trafficking, forgery, theft, receiving stolen goods and fraud against the National Health Service.

The investigations were coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Carlo Lasperanza and the deputy prosecutor Daria Monsurro', in direct collaboration - several meetings were held at the British embassy in Rome - with the representatives of the National Crime Agency. The investigation - explain the NAS of Latina - has allowed "to dismantle a criminal association, based in Sant'Antimo, outlining the roles of the suspects (most of whom had previous convictions for crimes against the person and property) who, through the use of false medical prescriptions and traceable to receipts stolen from health facilities and doctors' offices in Lazio, Tuscany and Lombardy, unduly acquired (and at no cost) high-cost drugs, paid entirely by the NHS, in pharmacies in the regions to which the prescriptions belonged, causing in some cases the unavailability of such medicines for patients, pharmacies and regional pharmaceutical warehouses".
POSTAL INVESTIGATIONS
The in-depth investigations – conducted through technical activities, photographic reconnaissance of postal packages destined for abroad, shadowing services, video acquisitions at pharmacies to identify the individuals involved, the examination of a multitude of data and health documentation (about 10.000 prescriptions) – allowed us to trace the modus operandi of the members of the entire associative structure and to recover and seize 260 packages of drugs (for a total value of about 10.000 euros) and 650 stolen medical prescriptions. The subsequent channel for receiving stolen drugs was then identified, which, once collected from illegal warehouses in Sant'Antimo, were sent – by courier – to the United Kingdom to one of the associates (already a fugitive), who reintroduced them into the legal European commercial circuit, using local operators and wholesalers.
The NAS "highlights as an element of particular investigative importance that the collaboration with the English authorities, aimed at ascertaining the conduct carried out in British territory and to trace the financial flows of the proceeds obtained illicitly (quantified at approximately 1 million euros, a figure unduly reimbursed by the NHS to the pharmacies involved), has allowed the closure of the illicit commercial channels and the simultaneous seizure of some of the drugs being shipped".
