Ambush in Ponticelli: the clash between the Casellas and the De Micco-Di Martinos

A new Camorra war for the control of Ponticelli's illicit business is behind last night's ambush in Naples.

Investigators are pursuing a clash between the Casellas of Via Franciosa and the veteran De Micco-De Martino (formerly Bodo), now known as the "Xx." Last night's shootout on Via Esopo, in the heart of the Incis neighborhood, killed Giulio Fiorentino, a 29-year-old from the Conocal neighborhood, believed to be the right-hand man or at least one of the most trusted men of the De Micco-De Martino clan. He was also wounded, along with 23-year-old Vincenzo Di Costanzo, known as "o' gabibbo." Fiorentino died at Villa Betania Hospital, where he had arrived immediately after the raid.

Both with a distinctive sign: a long beard. It is the new way of the "Xx" to recruit affiliates among the poorest, among the young people who work but have little hope and little money. The double ambush could be the response to the wounding last Friday of Giuseppe Righetto, known as 'o blob, a man related to the Casellas of the Conocal district, fighting for control of the drug dealing areas with the De Martinos and their allies De Micco of the Incis district. An ambush disguised as an attempted robbery, as Righetto has reported, but investigators have doubts. The man was hit in the hand while he says he was trying to defend himself from two people who allegedly tried to rob him in via Franciosa, an area under the military control of the Casella clan.

It was impossible for the investigators to gather evidence. No one saw or heard anything. No contribution can come from recorded images. There are no video surveillance cameras in the area. A possible contribution could come, when he is able to confer with the investigators, from the injured in the ambush, Vincenzo Di Costanzo. He is hospitalized at the Ospedale del Mare, with wounds to his legs and groin. He underwent a delicate surgical operation and is not considered to be in danger of life.

The investigators' questions

Investigators are trying to understand if the two men targeted were both intended targets of the killers or just one of them while the other was involved because he was in his company? Can the ambush be traced back to the dynamics of the Camorra struggles for control of illicit businesses in the area? This is another question that needs to be answered. There are certainly fibrillations in the 'relations' between the clans in Ponticelli.

the report of the slide on bridges

A detailed picture of the criminal situation in Ponticelli and the power of the clans comes from the latest semi-annual report of the Dia which dedicates a special chapter to the territorial context. "In the context of Ponticelli - according to the report provided to Parliament - the structural and operational fragmentation of the De Micco clan has given rise to the proliferation of other groups that have also exploited the weakening of the opposing D'Amico clan. Therefore, we are in the presence of a criminal cartel formed by the historic families De Luca Bossa-Minichini-Schisa who have joined forces with other clans from the surrounding neighborhoods, extending their influence also in the municipality of Cercola.

the camorra of the luzzatti district

In the territory, however, the operations of the opposing De Martino family remain, loyal to the disjointed De Micco clan that manages some drug dealing areas in the Rione Fiat area with the approval of the De Luca Bossa, while, in the Rione Luzzatti, the strong roots of the Casella family are confirmed - an articulation of the dissolved Sarno clan – whose top members and affiliates were released from prison in October 2019 due to a procedural defect after being reached, in 2018, by a restrictive measure”. Furthermore, according to what the DIA reports, for the De Luca Bossa-Menichini clan there are “two young members of the aforementioned criminal families present in the territory, one of whom was released from prison in April 2020 and placed under house arrest, who are also said to be gathering characters from the dissolved Sarno clan”.
