Grocery stores and fruit and vegetable shops inside markets reopened to the public this morning. But not all of them.
The exception to the closure order that came into force last Saturday concerns – explains ordinance no. 9 signed yesterday evening by the President of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca – “shops/garages located near or inside market areas, where there is the possibility of limiting access and limited to businesses with direct access to the water network”.
Water network requirement
In fact, the requirement of direct access to the water supply replaces the one previously required in ordinances 7 and 8 of 10 and 11 March of the availability of an individual bathroom. As a result of the new rule, the local markets, such as Torretta, Fuorigrotta or Vomero, have reopened in Naples, limited to food shops and agricultural and floricultural products. Other activities (clothing, household products and others) remain closed inside the markets.
The exemption does not apply to street vendors and therefore the vast majority of open-air markets which, not having access to the water supply, do not satisfy the required requirement.

“We learned about it last night,” explains Luigi Russo, owner of a delicatessen in the Torretta market, “and even with minimal notice, we made sure to be regularly open this morning so as not to miss out on customer service. Many don’t know about it yet and we are calling them one by one. For us, it’s good news. In a time of difficulty, the prospect of remaining closed at Easter would have been a blow. Now we hope that the other market activities can reopen soon.” In the meantime, to protect its members, Coldiretti Campania is preparing to send a note to the Region in which the regional director Salvatore Loffreda will propose to equip the stands at the Campagna Amica markets with chemical toilets and a related safety plan.
