Campania Teatro Festival 2021: XIV edition from June 12 to July 11. Preview on March 19 with Maestro Riccardo Muti at the Mercadante theater.

In September there will be space for the Dance and International sections with shows by the Argentine director Marina Otero, the Greek choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou and the Swiss director Cristoph Marthaler.

Same slogan, new Festival. Same slogan, Theater is reborn with you, because after a year the true rebirth of the theater sector still belongs to the category of announcements and good intentions. New Festival because this 2021 edition, the fifth directed by Ruggero Cappuccio, will go down in history as the one where the Napoli Teatro Festival becomes the Campania Teatro Festival.

A way to anticipate the future of an event that from 2022 will increasingly extend its cultural action from Naples to the entire region, making the link and unity between landscape and architectural assets organic, but also to reiterate and better specify the concrete commitment of the Campania Region in support of a multidisciplinary event, organized by the Campania dei Festival Foundation chaired by Alessandro Barbano, which knows how to combine national and international culture with the beauty of some of the most evocative and symbolic places in the Campania region.
A wealth that is exalted, valorized and conveyed not only through the involvement of many important entities of the Italian and foreign theatre scene, but also with the attention to the talent and professionalism of many productions and companies that have been operating in Campania for years, with a commitment that in some cases is not only artistic but also social. There will be more than 1500 entertainment workers in our Region who will be part of the Campania Theater Festival 2021. A concrete sign of informal support for those who continue to suffer the harsh economic consequences of the pandemic on a daily basis in a sector that has always been in difficulty. Waiting, and hoping, that the State will do its part, as is happening in other European countries, recognizing rights that are currently still denied.
The main venue of the Festival, with the setting up of eight stages, will be the Real Bosco di Capodimonte this year, which will host for a month a real theatrical citadel between the Courtyard of the Royal Palace, Casino della Regina, Porta Miano Landscape Garden, Porcelain Factory, Pastoral Landscape Garden, Praterie della Capraia, the Garden of the Princes and the Cisternone space, where the Post-Festival events will be held. A choice dictated by three reasons, all equally important: the vastness of the spaces, fundamental for the times we still live in, the happy experience of the previous edition and the relationship of great collaboration with the director Sylvain Bellenger.

The other events will take place in the Teatro Grande in Pompeii, at the Belvedere di San Leucio in Caserta, in Montesarchio (in Piazza Umberto I and in the Museo Archeologico del Sannio Caudino), in the Teatro Naturale in Pietrelcina, in the Amphitheatre of Avella and in Salerno, in the Cloister of the Cathedral and outside the Ghirelli theatre. There will also be events in Naples in the State Archives of Naples, in the Refectory of the Cloister of San Domenico Maggiore, at Made in Cloister and, again in Capodimonte, in the Sala Causa. The preview of March 19 with Maestro Riccardo Muti will be held at the Teatro Mercadante, while the September shows will be staged in three different theatres in the city: the Bellini, the Trianon and the Politeama.

Capodimonte, one of the most representative places of the Bourbon Era, will also be central to “The Royal Dream. The Bourbons of Naples”, a Special Project by Ruggero Cappuccio curated by Marco Perillo, which, responding to the Foundation's mission to promote and enhance the assets of the Region's material and immaterial cultural heritage, wants to involve, through a historical and artistic focus on the century of the Kingdom, some of the main Bourbon sites in Campania. The project, in addition to seven unpublished stories written by narrators and interpreted by seven different actors, which will be staged in the Garden of the Princes, also includes the publication of a printed guide to the same sites, edited by Marco Perillo himself, which will be distributed free of charge to the public who will follow the shows scheduled at the Festival.

The Campania Teatro Festival travels in the sign of continuity with the past, once again adopting a scheme that has made it in a short time one of the most recognized and recognizable cultural realities of our country, increasingly appreciated on an international level as demonstrated by the constant and significant presence in the Italia Festival network and in the EFA (European Festival Association). Also this year, out of the 38 national prose shows, there will be 29 absolute debuts, reaffirming that attention to contemporary dramaturgy that is now one of the distinctive traits of the event. 85% of the theatrical texts performed at the Campania Teatro Festival are by living authors.

The 10 Sections (Italian Prose, International, Observatory, SportOpera, Dance, Music, Literature, Cinema, Exhibitions, Special Projects) have been confirmed, proving the multidisciplinarity that has characterized all the editions directed by Ruggero Cappuccio and represents the true soul of the Festival. Eight of these sections are scheduled between June and July, while those dedicated to Dance and International shows are scheduled for September. In particular, three national debuts have already been scheduled for foreign Companies, with defined dates and locations: on the 8th and 9th at the Bellini Theater in Naples, the show by Argentine director Marina Otero, on the 16th and 17th the new work by Greek choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou at the Politeama Theater in Naples, while on the 23rd and 24th the latest creation by Swiss director Cristoph Marthaler, with Graham F. Valentine, will be performed at the Bellini Theater.

An agreement that will materialize with the co-production of three shows included in the Special Projects section of the Festival, which will be communicated later jointly with the Neapolitan Stabile and will be performed at the Teatro Grande di Pompei as part of the “Pompeii Theatrum Mundi” review.

Once again, as has always happened in the editions directed by Ruggero Cappuccio, the image of the Festival is entrusted to the creativity of Maestro Mimmo Paladino who, interpreting the identity and soul of the festival, has created a work of art in seven paintings that will embellish the catalogue and materials of the event. Furthermore, the fruitful synergy that the Fondazione Campania dei Festival has built day after day with the Cultural Institutes (Institut Français, Goethe Institut, Istituto Cervantes, British Council) and the Universities (Università degli Studi di Napoli l'Orientale, Università Federico II, Suor Orsola Benincasa, Università Luigi Vanvitelli and Università di Salerno) continues with growing strength and intensity. Media partners in 2021 will be Rai Cultura, Rai5, which will broadcast some events of the festival, and Rai Radio3.

Prices

Last but not least, the Campania Teatro Festival confirms a careful pricing policy aimed at encouraging audience participation. Tickets will continue to cost from 8 to 5 euros and will be free for the weakest social groups. Tickets can be purchased in the coming months online on the website and on the day of the event at the box office set up for the occasion. The proceeds from the shows in the Music section will be donated to the Cotugno Hospital in Naples.
