Surfing Champion Dies After Being Struck by Lightning

Salvadoran surfing champion Katherine Diaz died Friday after being struck by lightning while training in the ocean off a beach in the country's southwest.

La Salvadoran Surf Federation confirmed the news with a post on social media: “A great athlete who represented our country has left us. El Salvador is in mourning.” Katherine was the daughter of Federation president Jose Diaz. “We are very saddened by this death,” said Yamil Bukele, president of the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (Indes), on Twitter. The accident occurred while the 22-year-old was training on El Tunco beach, on the Pacific Ocean coast.

According to local media, Diaz was struck by lightning while emerging from the water during a thunderstorm. She was preparing for the Isa World Surf Games in El Salvador. The event, from May 29 to June 6, serves as a qualifier for the Tokyo Olympic Games, where surfing will make its Olympic debut.
