They ask for a more colorful school with outdoor lessons where teachers must pay attention to Covid and overcome the old notionalism to be more open and empathetic.

This is the message coming from Neapolitan children, addressed in a video letter to the new Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi. The initiative is by the Eco Onlus social cooperative, which makes caring for children its mission in every social change. It asked dozens of children from the Neapolitan area to dedicate a greeting and a thought to the new "head" of Italian schools.

The children addressed the "master of masters" with the simplest of invitations: "Dear Minister". And then a series of practical advice such as coloring the school, carrying out more outdoor lessons with more hours of physical education, more computers and projects. Distance learning is not popular even if it is understood that at this moment it cannot be done without it. And we need to stay close to the teachers because they are playing a very important role. School is recognized as having a central role in a child's life. Help and reference. But school is also something else: sociality, interaction, friends, personal experiences, one's own life that must be shared at home with parents.

All this calls the school to question its future. “With distance learning and the changing world – explains the educationalist Sofia Flauto, creator of the video letters to the minister – we are called to change the methodology of approach with students. School, previously in person, was mainly a transmission of knowledge. Now it must be above all an empathetic way that makes kids understand how to deal with emergencies. School is knowing how to stay close; even through distance learning, even if teachers and students are far away. So it is not only, as the kids underline, a transmission of knowledge. It is necessary to rethink the traditional methodology, that of explaining the lesson, questioning and grading. But above all to show kids that we are there, always. The teacher must be a point of reference, knowing how to involve, knowing how to be empathetic, a builder of good practices, a guide for their present and future”.

The Eco cooperative is doing a great job of bearing witness and being close to children in times of pandemic restrictions, looking at the current world through the eyes of the little ones, as demonstrated by the initiatives to reopen parks, video stories on social media, and surveys with pediatricians, psychologists, sociologists, and experts. Through its centers, it has activated a solidarity initiative for food deliveries in collaboration with the Food Bank and McDonald's restaurants to provide moments of joy and sharing even in the most difficult neighborhoods of Naples and the province. It has created moments of play with Rodari's fairy tales repped by Lucariello, and has created opportunities for fun by dusting off old-fashioned games. Now the latest initiative is video letters to the new Minister of Education to design the school that children would like.

(The families of all children in the video have signed the necessary releases.)
