lured into a trap at the Rapicano house
The investigations have established that, on the same day of the disappearance, through a ruse devised by Pasquale Rapicano and Gaetano Vitale, the victim was lured to Catello Rapicano's home, under the pretext of being able to discuss criminal business related to drug trafficking more freely. Having entered the apartment, Carolei was made to sit at the kitchen table, where in a moment of distraction he was grabbed from behind by Catello Rapicano who, blocking his movements, allowed Giovanni Savarese to place a rope around his neck, pulled at the ends respectively by the latter and by Pasquale Rapicano, while Gaetano Vitale blocked his hands to prevent him from being able to free himself.
THE BODY DISAPPEARED IN THE SCHITO AREA
Once killed, the man's body was bagged and loaded onto a motor vehicle, with which Gaetano Vitale took care of transporting it, escorted onto the road by Pasquale Rapicano who preceded him on a scooter, to a property in the Via Schito area, and left at the disposal of Pasquale Vuolo, who independently disposed of it without allowing it to be found again.
Giovanni Battista Panariello, a minor at the time, also made an important contribution to the murder. He acted as a lookout near Catello Rapicano's house, monitoring the road for any dangerous situations that could undermine the killing action.
The murder of Raffaele Carolei was carried out in execution of an order issued by the leaders of the D'Alessandro clan, against all those who, previously affiliated with the opposing Omobono-Scarpa group, had participated in the murder of Giuseppe Verdoliva, driver and person of extreme trust of the deceased clan leader Michele D'alessandro.
