Forestry checks at the Caserta fruit and vegetable market: cabbages, walnuts and tomato purees seized

San Tammaro. The Forest Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit of the Environmental, Agri-food and Forestry Police of Caserta and the Forest Carabinieri Station of Marcianise, assisted in this circumstance by a crew of the Territorial CC Company of S. Maria CV, carried out targeted checks at the Fruit and Vegetable Market of San Tammaro (CE), aimed at verifying compliance with the traceability and labeling procedures of fruit and vegetable products, both certified quality and conventional, held for sale.

These checks were carried out in conjunction with the staff of the Central Inspectorate for the Protection of Quality and Fraud Repression of Agri-food Products – ICQRF, Southern Italy, and the Inspectors at Agecontrol, regional branches of Calabria, Campania and Lazio, i.e. the public agency for controls and community actions of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies.

In particular, the checks concerned the fruit and vegetable products placed on sale in the special stands present inside the aforementioned San Tammaro market.

Following the inspection, which involved a total of ten companies, irregularities were found regarding the absence of traceability titles on: 37 boxes containing cauliflowers; 175 kg of Sorrento walnuts; 1200 bottles of presumed “tomato puree”.

The presence of 350 kg of red onion braids containing a label evoking the PGI product “Cipolla Rossa di Calabria” was also ascertained.

The 175 kg of Sorrento walnuts, the 350 kg of red onion braids and the 1.200 bottles containing presumed tomato puree were placed under administrative seizure following the irregularities found.

Batches of “navel” oranges were also found to be marketed without the mandatory information regarding the product quality category indicated on the tax certificates.
