Louise Voccia, known among the Italian Americans of Connecticut, where she lives, with the nickname of “La ricciulella” because of her curly hair, was born in Scafati in 1890 and left Italy at the age of 16. Her son Catello, Charlie for the Americans, has never seen Italy.
A story for Louise
It was 1994 when Eric Lanzieri, son of Catello, set out for the first time on the trail of his grandmother and father with a trip to Italy. A book was born. “A story for Louise” is the story of Luigiella, Lanzieri’s grandmother registered at the registry office of the municipality of Scafati, and her son Charlie.
On Friday 19 March at 11:00, in online mode, the “Antonio Pacinotti” Higher Education Institute of Scafati, in the presence of the DS prof. ssa Adriana Maria Loredana Miro, the mayor, Dr. Cristoforo Salvati, the general director of the USR Campania, Dr. ssa Luisa Franzese and the president of DiSAL Campania, Dr. ssa Chiara Priore, will pay homage to Lanzieri, connected from Florida, with a presentation of the book as part of the meeting - debate, moderated by prof. Giovanni Savarese, entitled Emigration: bonds and fractures with the “land of origin”.
The event, which will involve the fifth-grade classes of the Institute, will also be an opportunity to present the volume, La dissolvenza della memoria, winner of the fifth edition of the literary prize “Dispatriati”, dedicated to an unpublished work on the theme of emigration, written by Prof. Sara Carbone and now in its second edition, which tells, among the many stories of emigrants from the Salerno hinterland of the early twentieth century, that of another Luigiella, also known in America with the name of Louise.

“The first is an ethnographic memoir, the second is an example of pure ethnographic research, both volumes provide historical testimony of great value, with an engaging and impeccable style” says Angela Cacciarru, professor of Human Geography at the University of North Carolina and at the University of Genoa, who will speak during the meeting.
