Coronavirus, at Ceinge in Naples the 'super variant' discovered by the Bicocca University of Milan is being studied.
The Center for Advanced Biotechnology at the Federico II University of Naples is following the virus mutations discovered in a patient from Novara. "We are sequencing the variant that contains mutations isolated from the Nigerian and English variants. Now we will analyze it to understand its ability to penetrate humans, its performance," said Massimo Zollo, professor of genetics at the Ceinge, the advanced biotechnology center of the Federico II University of Naples, on the variant under study, discovered by the Bicocca University of Milan in a patient from Novara. “The study starts – explains Zollo – from how the spike protein is mutating, in particular by looking at its reactions with the angiotensin 2 receptor that allows it to enter the human body. The interaction of the spike protein is fundamental, because vaccines are designed precisely to block it. We researchers are convinced that we are only observing the emerged part of the iceberg, but underneath there are others that can explode, for this reason they must be traced. However, I remain optimistic, if we manage to reach 90% vaccination of the population and isolate the new variants we will all be able to return to a new life”.
