Eating disorders and solidarity, a project to support girls suffering from anorexia and bulimia due to the lockdown
With the pandemic, eating disorder problems have become more acute. There are now 3 million Italians who suffer from this pathology that manifests itself at an increasingly lower average age and that no longer affects only girls: many cases concern men, who in the adolescent age group between 12 and 17 years old reach 20% of the total, highlighting, now more than ever, how it is no longer a gender disorder.
Hence the birth of 'Take Care Of Yourself', a project to accompany you on a path of personal rebirth, which sees the permanent laser hair removal treatment become a stimulus, an exhortation to have more confidence, to start taking care of your body again, especially in reference to pathologies such as anorexia and bulimia, which also result in hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth) and which often see that body despised.
Designed by Epilator Point, a chain specializing in laser hair removal, the solidarity project involves Ananke, the largest network of professionals in Italy for the treatment of eating disorders, with the aim of donating an intimate and personal gesture of care, which will also have a therapeutic value. For a year, the group's centers will provide free entire cycles of permanent laser hair removal sessions to 30 patients of the facility, capable of permanently removing the annoying blemish.
“The Covid-19 health emergency is making the lives of those suffering from eating disorders even more difficult,” says Alessandro Raggi, psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and national vice president of the Ananke Villa Miralago Association. “Loneliness, a lack of relationships, and the inability to take care of oneself only increase the discomfort of girls and boys suffering from anorexia and bulimia.
The initiative of Epilator Point Italy is moving in the direction of a treatment of the individual, which intends to combine psychological and nutritional aspects with a symbolic gesture of pacification with one's body image".
The 2020 data
The data for 2020 are disconcerting: in the first half of the year, new cases registered rose to 230 compared to 160 in the same period in 2019, with a 30% increase in reports. The trauma resulting from the lockdown, isolation and loss of social relationships, combined with the forced closures of accommodation facilities were the main causes.
“The project is part of the social responsibility campaigns that we intend to carry out consistently – explains Fabio Formisano, founder of the Epil Point brand – because we believe it is ethically correct to help, as much as possible, the lives of people who need support, a metaphorical caress or simply a sign that gives the “go” to a rebirth in such a difficult moment.
The protocol specifically designed for Ananke includes a step in the center (with the laser session performed by the technical directors) and a home step, with a line of complimentary skincare products to create a beauty routine for the body, but above all for the soul”.
