Covid outbreak in a Carabinieri barracks in Caserta

A small outbreak of Covid it broke out in the carabinieri barracks in Macerata Campania; some military personnel were infected, but reinforcement units were sent and the station, promptly sanitized, is functioning regularly. All the Carabinieri who tested positive had received the anti-Covid vaccine a few days earlier. The municipality of 10 inhabitants is among the most affected by the coronavirus in this third wave, with 150 currently positive; in practice, more than 1% of residents are infected.

In the rest of the Caserta area the situation remains worrying, with numerous municipalities that have tens or hundreds of positives; there are 612 positives in the capital Caserta, 523 in Maddaloni 523 while in Marcianise, a municipality already a red zone during the second wave, there are 488; here the mayor Antonello Velardi has ordered, with an ordinance valid from March 24 to April 5, that bars, pastry shops and tobacconists close at 14 pm from Monday to Friday, with total closure on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing the presence in each single commercial establishment open to the public of a maximum of five people (ten for large-scale distribution); for supermarkets and businesses selling basic necessities, opening from Monday to Friday until 18 pm and on Saturdays until 17 pm has been ordered, with total closure on Sundays.

Velardi received criticism and threats via Facebook for this decision, receiving solidarity from fellow mayors, including the mayor of Aversa Alfonso Golia, according to which "dissent towards administrative activity is sacrosanct, but when you wish a mayor to be eliminated by all, beyond political affiliations, you have to stop and think and reject this dialectic far from democratic debate". In the Caserta area, out of 104 municipalities, only eight are currently "covid free", with zero cases, and they are all located in the Matese area.

As of today, according to the daily report of the ASL of Caserta, there are 7288 current positives in the province, 35 more than yesterday; an increase due to the difference between new daily cases, 331, and recovered, which are 291. The positivity rate remains high, 13,5% (2445 swabs performed), as well as the death toll is also growing - five recorded in the last 24 hours - for a total of 908 people who have died from coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic.
